New artificial spider silk is more solid than natural cheap for medical textiles

Natural spider silk is an extremely expensive material, so commercial use value is not high.

Scientists have made great efforts to obtain artificial spider silk similar to that of natural spider silk. Over the past 10 years, scientists have developed similar properties with the spider silk recombinant protein. However, textile fibers made from such recombinant proteins often require the use of a lytic or coagulating agent which, in some cases, may be toxic, poses an obstacle to the biomedical application of synthetic spider silk.

Spider silk is the main component of a large number of proteins. A variety of glands in the abdomen of the spider are responsible for the secretion of silk proteins, which contain a highly concentrated solution. The solution passes through a narrow channel in which the acidity is altered to increase the concentration and the spider silk also becomes an insoluble fiber.

Inspired by the way spiders secrete spider silk, Jan Johansson, Anna Rising and his colleagues have developed a hybrid protein that contains the amino acid sequence of spider filaments present in two different species of spiders. This method achieves the purpose of controlling protein agglomeration, thereby mimicking the natural processes of spider spinning.

In addition, scientists have also developed a method to control the acidity of protein solution silking method to produce a solid degree close to the natural spider silk and can be deformed artificial spider silk. The researchers stressed that this method uses only a change in the PH value of the water solvent, so this artificial material does not produce biocompatibility problems.

The biodegradable synthetic spider silk obtained in this way is more economical and easier to obtain, and can be used for mass production of lightweight materials for advanced biomaterials and medical devices.

 This technology will improve the medical textile, such as medical fabric, medical thread development.
